Operator guide
Most studios overstate sauna capacity because they count sessions rather than slots. A slot includes changing, the session, cool-down, a shower, cleaning and the time the room itself needs before the next group. Counting it properly usually shrinks a heat schedule, and it changes what you can responsibly sell.
Sauna capacity is the most commonly overstated number on a recovery studio's floor plan. The overstatement is rarely deliberate. It comes from counting the wrong thing: an operator counts sessions, multiplies by open hours, and gets a number that a booking system will happily accept and a real Saturday will never produce. The gap between those two numbers is where oversold slots, backed-up lobbies and members who wait in a towel come from.
The fix is to count slots instead. A slot is everything that has to happen between one member arriving for heat and the room being genuinely ready for the next: changing, the session, whatever cool-down the member takes, a shower if your layout creates demand for one, cleaning and drying, and the room's own recovery. Count that way and heat capacity usually falls. That is not a problem to be worked around.
It is the number you should have been scheduling against, pricing against and staffing against from the start.
Take one member from door to door and write down every step that consumes the room, the changing area or a staff member. Arrival and check-in. Changing. Getting into the room. The session, at whatever length your studio posts. Getting out, which is slower than getting in. A cool-down sit. A shower. Changing back. Somewhere in there, a staff member wipes down a bench, checks the floor and resets whatever needs resetting. The room, meanwhile, is doing its own work: shedding moisture, returning to temperature, moving air.
The posted session length is one item on that list, and on many floor plans it is not even the largest one. A studio that books back-to-back against the posted length is scheduling a queue, not a service, and the queue does not appear in the booking data because a member who waits still shows as attended. It appears instead as a review about crowding, a member who quietly stops booking evenings, and a front desk that spends its shift apologising.
Measure this; do not estimate it. Take a stopwatch to a busy evening, follow three or four members through the whole cycle, and write down what you see, not what your schedule says. The measured number becomes your slot. Everything downstream, capacity, pricing, membership caps, staffing, is built on it.
A traditional dry sauna is one room shared by several people at once, which makes its capacity a seating question rather than a booking question. The upper bound is bench length divided by a comfortable per-person allowance, and the comfortable allowance is larger than the physical minimum: people sit with space between them, some sit rather than lie, and a bench that technically holds a certain number will not be used that way by strangers. The manufacturer or builder can tell you the design occupancy for the room. What you sell against is that figure discounted for how people actually behave in it.
Two adjustments matter more than the arithmetic. The first is that mixed parties do not pack: a group of three friends and two individuals will not distribute themselves the way a seating chart assumes, and the room hits social capacity before it hits physical capacity. The second is that the top bench and the lower bench are not interchangeable to members, so the effective seat count is smaller than the total. Both push the same direction, and both are visible if you watch the room for an hour instead of reading its spec.
Shared rooms also carry a scheduling choice with real consequences. If you sell an open room where anyone can enter, you have high theoretical throughput and no control over who is inside at once, which makes peak unpleasant and cleaning irregular. If you sell timed group sessions with a start time, you get a clean, predictable turnover window and lower theoretical throughput. Both are defensible. Selling the first while promising the experience of the second is where complaints come from.
An infrared cabin behaves like a different business on a floor plan. It is usually sold as a private resource: one party at a time, door closed, booked as a unit. That means capacity is the cabin count, not a seat count, and adding capacity means adding another cabin with its own door swing, its own controls, its own cleaning and its own share of floor area. A studio that wants to double heat capacity in cabins is doing construction, not rearranging benches.
The booking rule is where cabin capacity is usually lost. If your policy allows a couple or a pair of friends to book one cabin together, a two-person cabin sells one slot for two members, which is good for the member and neutral for revenue only if you price it that way. If your policy is strictly single occupancy, the cabin count is your simultaneous member count and it is small. Neither policy is wrong, but the schedule and the price have to agree with the one you chose, and most studios discover the disagreement after a member has already asked.
Cabins also change the shape of turnover. A cabin is a small enclosed space that one party has just used, so cleaning is thorough and the door usually stands open for a while afterwards. That open door is real occupancy time that no booking system counts unless you build it into the slot length yourself.
Members do not leave a heat room and walk straight out of the building. They sit somewhere, they cool off, and most of them want a shower. That behaviour is predictable enough to plan for, and if you have not planned for it, the demand does not disappear. It queues. A studio with several heat stations and one shower has a hidden ceiling on its heat schedule, and the ceiling binds exactly at the times you most wanted to sell.
The right way to model this is to count the cool-down bench and the shower as stations of their own, with their own occupancy times, sitting downstream of every heat booking. Then check whether the downstream stations can absorb the throughput the heat rooms are supposedly capable of. If they cannot, your real heat capacity is whatever the shower count allows, and no amount of scheduling discipline in the sauna itself changes that.
This is also where contrast sequencing helps or hurts, depending on the layout. A studio pairing heat with cold has members moving between two stations and finishing at a shower, which can either smooth the flow or create a bottleneck at a single point. Walk the sequence physically before you sell it as a package, and watch where people stand and wait.
Cleaning is where posted throughput and real throughput separate most visibly. A heat room used by strangers all day needs benches wiped, floors handled, and anything textile managed on a cadence somebody is accountable for. The cleaning products, contact times and materials that are safe for your specific interior come from the manufacturer and from your own supplier, because wood, composite and painted surfaces do not tolerate the same chemicals, and a cleaning routine that damages a bench is expensive twice.
Drying matters as much as cleaning and gets less attention. A surface that is still wet when the next member sits on it is a service complaint whatever your protocol says, and a room that never fully dries between sessions accumulates problems in the fabric of the building rather than in a log book. Build drying into the slot as its own step, and give staff a standard they can actually observe: a surface is ready when it looks and feels ready, not when a timer expires.
Write the cleaning cadence down and put a name against it per shift. The single most common failure in a heat program is not a missing procedure. It is a procedure that exists on a laminated card while every staff member privately believes somebody else did it during the rush.
Every heat modality has an operating envelope it has to return to before the next user arrives, and the room, not just the surfaces, is what has to get there. Opening the door for cleaning drops the room out of that envelope. So does whatever moisture the previous session left behind. Ventilation and make-up air determine how quickly it comes back, and the answer is a property of your specific room, your specific unit and your specific mechanical setup rather than a number anyone can publish for you.
Ask the manufacturer directly what the unit's guidance is for recovery between sessions, and then measure your own room against it rather than assuming the spec describes your installation. A room in a corner with poor air movement will behave differently from the identical unit in a well-ventilated space (same model, same settings, different building). The gap between the two is a scheduling constraint, and it is one of the few in this business that gets worse rather than better as you get busier, because a room that never gets a break never fully recovers.
This is also the argument for building a real break into a heat schedule at some point in the day. A block where the room is closed, dried, ventilated and reset costs you a few slots and prevents the slow accumulation of humidity, odour and wear that eventually costs you the room. Operators who schedule that block treat it as maintenance. Operators who do not tend to discover it as an emergency.
The count itself is short once you have measured the inputs, and it is worth writing down somewhere your whole team can see, because everyone from the front desk to the person setting membership caps is implicitly using some version of it already. The findings below, computed from our own studio listings, are useful as a sanity check on the revenue side: what a session is listed at and what an entry-level membership costs across published profiles tell you what a heat slot has to earn and what an unlimited plan is really promising against a room with a ceiling.
The uncomfortable version of this exercise is finding that you have been selling more heat capacity than you have, usually through an unlimited membership sold against a room that fills every evening. The fix is rarely to add a room. It is to move demand, because the empty hours are already paid for: off-peak pricing, timed group sessions at the busiest times so turnover becomes predictable, a booking window that stops one member from holding every prime slot, and a waitlist that fills the cancellations you currently lose.
The sequencing question matters here too. A member who arrives with no plan books the same prime slot every week because it is the only thing they know to do. A member who arrives with a plan that says what happens this visit and when the next one is can often be moved to a time that suits both of you. Whatever you do, do it with the measured number rather than the posted one. A heat schedule built on real slot lengths is quieter to run, easier to staff and far less likely to produce the specific complaint that costs a studio members: a member who paid, arrived on time, and waited anyway.

Questions
It depends on your slot length and your station count, and both need measuring rather than estimating. Divide your open hours by the full slot, meaning arrival, changing, the session, cool-down, shower and reset, then multiply by usable seats for a shared room or by cabin count for cabins. Subtract any block you close for a deep reset. The resulting figure is almost always lower than the one you get by dividing the hour by the posted session length, and it is the one worth scheduling against.
Block the slot, not the session: follow a few members door to door on a busy evening with a stopwatch, record the full cycle including changing, cool-down, a shower and the staff reset between users, and use that measured figure as the booking length.
They fail differently. A shared traditional room has higher theoretical throughput because several people use it at once, but its capacity is a social seating question and its turnover is harder to control unless you sell timed sessions.
