Accommodating-resistance training matches, not beats, traditional resistance training for strength
Accommodating-resistance (flywheel) training produces strength gains statistically indistinguishable from traditional free-weight or weight-stack resistance training, with only a small additional advantage for muscle power, in a meta-analysis of 16 studies and 341 subjects.
How strong the finding is
Meta-analysis of 16 RCTs/controlled trials, moderate quality.
How it may work
Both training modes provide adequate mechanical tension for strength adaptation; accommodating resistance's added eccentric overload appears to preferentially benefit power output rather than maximal strength.
What complicates this
The power advantage was small and did not hold when the comparator was specifically free-weight training rather than weight-stack machines.
