A meta-analysis of 15 binaural-beat studies (31 effect sizes) reported an overall medium and significant effect on memory and attention (g = 0.40), while the paired systematic review of the same studies found conflicting results, particularly for theta and beta frequencies. A separate systematic review of 10 auditory-intervention trials in young adults reported standardized mean differences of roughly 0.3 to 0.6 across anxiety, sleep, and cognitive outcomes, with the authors noting that heterogeneity and small samples limit certainty.
How it may work
Two tones of slightly different frequency presented one to each ear produce a perceived beat that is proposed to entrain cortical rhythms associated with attention.
Safety notes
Scope limit: every study behind this claim tested auditory binaural beats alone. No included study tested a BrainTap device or any combined audio-plus-light entrainment product, so this evidence does not transfer to a specific branded audio-visual system.
