A vibrating platform transmits repeated mechanical loads through the feet and legs and can trigger reflex muscle contractions. This may support neuromuscular strength or balance, but whether the delivered strain consistently stimulates clinically meaningful bone formation is uncertain.
What the research shows
The evidence conflicts. In the 12-month T-bone randomized trial, 65 postmenopausal women with osteopenia were assigned to whole-body vibration, resistance training, or no new exercise; bone-density T-scores did not change significantly in any group, although some knee-strength measures improved within the vibration group. A 2024 overview of 15 systematic reviews found that 13 were critically low quality and most outcome evidence was very low certainty, with only a few site-specific positive findings. In contrast, a 2024 meta-analysis of 13 randomized trials with 783 postmenopausal women with osteoporosis reported small improvements in lumbar-spine and femoral-neck bone mineral density and pain, but no significant muscle- or fat-mass effect. Together, these results support an honest mixed grade, not a disease-treatment claim.
