Transcranial near-infrared light is proposed to influence mitochondrial energy production, cerebral blood flow, and inflammatory signaling, but a full-body red-light bed does not reproduce the dose or delivery geometry of a head-targeted device.
What the research shows
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial, 48 participants age 11 or older with persistent post-concussion symptoms completed six weeks of transcranial photobiomodulation or placebo, delivered as two 10-minute sessions three times weekly. After adjustment for prior concussions and multiple comparisons, there were no significant between-group differences at three or six weeks. A separate publication described improvement in one person after eight weeks of home transcranial treatment, but a single case cannot establish efficacy.
