Cold plunge
Mixed findingsWhy it might help
Cold immersion produces an immediate sympathetic stress response followed by a recovery period. A delayed change in perceived stress is possible, but an acute stressor is not the same as treating chronic stress or burnout.
What the research shows
A systematic review and meta-analysis of 11 randomized trials with 3,177 healthy adults found lower stress only 12 hours after cold-water immersion, with no significant stress effect immediately, at one hour, 24 hours or 48 hours. Narrative findings suggested better sleep quality and quality of life, mood did not improve, and inflammatory markers rose acutely. Participants were overwhelmingly male outside one large study, protocols varied widely, and no trial enrolled people specifically for burnout, so the evidence is mixed and not a burnout treatment signal.
