Assisted stretch
Limited evidenceWhy it might help
Guided stretching of the tensor fasciae latae, glutes and lateral hip aims to reduce tension through the iliotibial band and improve hip mobility, which is a long-standing component of ITBS rehabilitation.
What the research shows
Stretching appears among the active conservative strategies reviewed for ITBS in runners, but the review identifies hip abductor strengthening as the core component driving pain and function improvement, with combined programmes outperforming single interventions. Older treatment reviews describe stretching as conventional practice while noting there is limited evidence supporting any one approach. Useful as part of a programme; not a stand-alone fix.

Effects of conservative treatment strategies for iliotibial band syndrome on pain and function in runners: a systematic review — PMC / Frontiers in Sports and Active Living, 2024
Thirteen studies and 201 participants; hip abductor strengthening emerged as the core component with pain relief of 27-100% over 2-8 weeks, and combined treatments outperformed single interventions. Only 5 RCTs, and heterogeneity prevented meta-analysis.
A Review of Treatments for Iliotibial Band Syndrome in the Athletic Population — PMC / Journal of Sports Medicine, 2013
Reviews rest, stretching, ice, friction massage and gluteus medius strengthening, concluding there is limited evidence to support one specific approach to the treatment of ITBS.
