Red and near-infrared light is proposed to influence mitochondrial signaling and local inflammatory and pain pathways. Whether those laboratory mechanisms translate into meaningful neck-pain relief from ordinary wellness devices is not established.
What the research shows
A randomized, triple-blinded, placebo-controlled trial assigned 72 adults with chronic nonspecific neck and/or shoulder pain to active photobiomodulation combined with a static magnetic field or placebo, twice weekly for three weeks. The active group reported lower short-term pain at measured follow-ups through seven days, while range of motion and treatment satisfaction did not differ. Because the intervention combined light with a magnetic field and follow-up was short, this is a limited adjunctive signal rather than proof for red-light therapy alone.
