Traditional sauna
Emerging evidenceWhy it might help
Heat raises heart rate and dilates blood vessels during a session; repeated exposure may influence vascular function, but it does not substitute for exercise or directly correct the cluster of metabolic risk factors.
What the research shows
In a multi-arm randomized trial of 47 sedentary adults with at least one cardiovascular risk factor, eight weeks of guideline-based exercise plus a 15-minute post-exercise sauna produced lower systolic blood pressure and total cholesterol than exercise alone, while no between-group differences appeared for the other measured outcomes. The design tested sauna as an add-on to exercise, not sauna alone and not reversal of metabolic syndrome.
