Cold-water immersion constricts blood vessels and dampens the inflammatory and perceptual response to hard training, which can make the next session feel more manageable.
What the research shows
This is the modality where the evidence genuinely cuts both ways. Cold-water immersion shows a small but real effect on post-exercise soreness in meta-analysis, yet a separate body of work suggests routine post-session cold immersion may blunt the very adaptations strength training is meant to produce, with muscle protein synthesis reduced by around 20% in one study. Endurance adaptations appear less affected. If you are overreached and trying to rebuild, the timing question matters more than the modality.

Meta-analysis ranking recovery techniques for soreness: massage largest (SMD -2.26), compression garments -0.92, cold-water immersion -0.47, contrast water therapy -0.40, stretching no significant effect. Authors note blinding was impossible, placebo effects could not be excluded, and only single-session interventions were evaluated.

Review finding post-exercise cold-water immersion can attenuate resistance-training adaptations: three of six studies showed blunted whole-muscle growth and myofibrillar protein synthesis fell by around 20%, while endurance adaptations appeared unaffected.
