Localized cryotherapy
Mixed findingsWhy it might help
Local cold constricts blood vessels and numbs the area, which is intended to limit bleeding into the muscle early on and to reduce pain.
What the research shows
Icing is part of the standard immediate care recommended for muscle contusion, and it reliably helps with pain. Whether it changes healing is a genuinely open question: one review of muscle-injury treatments argues typical icing does not cool muscle enough to influence repair, and notes animal work suggesting that cooling deeply enough might actually delay recovery and increase scarring. Treat it as a comfort and swelling measure in the first days, not a repair accelerator.

Muscle Contusion: Bruised Muscle Symptoms & Causes — Cleveland Clinic
Condition overview: a blunt blow crushes muscle fibers without breaking the skin; care is RICE plus rest of at least 5-7 days before returning to exercise, with compartment syndrome and myositis ossificans listed as complications.
Alternative treatments for muscle injury: massage, cryotherapy, and hyperbaric oxygen — PubMed / Current Reviews in Musculoskeletal Medicine, 2015
Review concluding that typical icing practices are unlikely to cool muscle sufficiently to influence repair, and that animal evidence suggests adequate cooling may delay recovery and increase scarring.
