The demands
Field hockey combines sustained intermittent running with repeated sprints, accelerations, decelerations and changes of direction. The low stick position adds trunk and hip demand, while the ball and sticks create impact exposure even though body checking is not part of the game. Unlimited substitutions allow repeated high-intensity spells, and match-load research shows meaningful differences among forwards, midfielders and defenders. In US school and collegiate play, preseason and the autumn schedule compress conditioning, practice and matches into a short block.

Broad field coverage and frequent transitions combine high running volume with accelerations and decelerations.

Field play repeatedly combines running with a flexed, rotated stick position. General fatigue may settle with load reduction; persistent, sharp or radiating pain needs assessment.
Body checking is not the core rule set, so contact is best described as incidental. Ball, stick, player and surface contact still occur, and protective equipment does not remove those exposures.
No. Match studies show position differences in distance, high-speed work, acceleration and peak load. Midfielders and forwards often carry higher running demand than defenders, while defensive reaction and braking work still matter.
Running volume, high-intensity work, stick posture and heat exposure can rise together. Progressive conditioning and heat acclimatization are the important controls; recovery work cannot make a sudden load jump safe.
A direct impact with significant swelling, loss of function, deformity or worsening pain is an injury assessment question. Do not use a routine recovery session to delay evaluation.
