The demands
Backpacking is hiking with two multipliers: carried load and repetition across days. A pack changes posture, balance, gait and energy cost on every climb and descent, while recovery is constrained by sleeping outdoors and starting again the next morning. Feet and skin often become the limiting system before cardiovascular fitness does; knees and ankles absorb uneven terrain under added mass, and the shoulders and low back carry a demand that day hiking may not reveal. The honest load is total pack weight, vertical gain and loss, hours on feet and the number of consecutive days.

The pack adds load to every step, and the second or third morning begins before soreness and skin irritation have fully cleared. Consecutive days and recovery constraints are the defining difference.
Track pack weight, time on feet, vertical gain and loss, and back-to-back days. Mileage alone hides the difference between a light flat walk and a loaded mountain route.
No. Load carriage changes energy cost, gait and balance, so pack weight should progress rather than jump. Build distance and load separately enough to see which change drives symptoms.
They can end a trip by changing gait and exposing skin. Footwear fit, sock and moisture choices, early friction management and wound care matter more than trying to numb the discomfort.
Focal worsening pain, instability, neurologic symptoms, significant swelling or an altered gait deserve a conservative decision, especially when help is remote. Recovery tools do not make a deteriorating injury safe.
