The demands
Track and field groups events with very different demands under one team name. Distance athletes accumulate repetitive running volume; sprinters and hurdlers repeat maximal accelerations and high-speed mechanics; jumpers and vaulters combine approach speed with explosive takeoff and landing; throwers repeat high-force rotational or linear efforts through the trunk and upper body. The common recovery mistake is treating every athlete as a distance runner. Event group, competition schedule and current training block have to come first.

Load isn't evenly distributed across a roster — what wears down depends on where you play.
Repeated acceleration, maximal-speed running and event-specific rhythm create high posterior-chain and lower-leg demand.
High repetitive running volume and workout density concentrate load through the foot, calf, shin, knee and hip.
Approach speed meets explosive takeoff and landing; pole vault also adds substantial upper-body and technical demand.
Throwers repeat high-force rotational or linear efforts with heavy strength work; combined-event athletes stack multiple demand profiles across competition days.
Gear and surface
Two athletes on the same schedule can accumulate very differently depending on what they train on and in.
Spike type, track surface, implement specifications and event equipment change mechanics and tissue load. New spikes or a new surface should be introduced progressively rather than on competition day.

No. A distance runner's repetitive volume, a sprinter's maximal speed, a jumper's takeoffs and landings, and a thrower's high-force technical repetitions are different exposures.
Maximal-speed running places very high demand on the posterior chain. Tightness may be fatigue, but a sharp onset, loss of speed or pain that changes mechanics needs assessment before more sprinting.
Diffuse soreness can accompany a load increase, but focal or worsening shin pain raises concern for a bone stress injury and should be assessed. Recovery modalities should not be used to keep training through that pattern.
Not by default. Throwers repeat high-force rotational or linear efforts and heavy strength work; their trunk, shoulder and elbow demands differ from running events.
Often there is barely a gap. Athletes who compete indoors may carry fatigue directly into outdoor preparation, so coaches should identify a real lower-load period rather than assuming the calendar provides one.
