The demands
Rowing repeats one coordinated chain — legs, trunk, then arms — under load for hundreds of strokes at a time. The cardiovascular demand is sustained, but the recurring musculoskeletal story is the lumbar spine: long ergometer pieces and fatigue can turn each stroke into more repeated spinal loading. Rib stress, knee irritation, forearm fatigue and shoulder complaints appear around the edges of that central pattern. On-water athletes also move between fall head races, winter erg work and spring sprint racing, so a change of surface or training mode can change the complaint even when total hours look similar.

Two athletes on the same schedule can accumulate very differently depending on what they train on and in.
A stationary ergometer fixes the athlete in a repeated pattern and can concentrate lumbar load during long pieces. Boat class, rigging and sweep side change symmetry; seat or foot-stretcher changes can alter the stroke even when training duration stays constant.

A stationary erg repeats the same loaded stroke without the movement and technical variation of the boat. Reviews identify prolonged ergometer use and previous low-back pain as relevant risk factors, so duration and technique deserve attention before adding more volume.
No. Diffuse trunk fatigue after a hard piece is different from focal pain with breathing, coughing or pulling. Rib stress injuries are documented in rowers and focal symptoms should be assessed rather than managed as routine soreness.
